Eguilos knocks game winner as Boracay Rum stalls Cafe France's QF entry

Jaymo Eguilos scored with 5 seconds remaining to lift Boracay Rum to 77-75 decision past Café France on Thursday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Waves blew a10-point lead late in the game but kept their poise to pull off the win.

Although they snapped a two-game skid, the result did not pleased Boracay Rum coach Lawrence Chongson, who did not conceal his disappointment.

“I’m disappointed with the way we finished (the game). My calculation is that we need to win by six points to have a chance to make the next round in case we got into a three way tie. We were up by 10 but we made a lot of bad plays down the stretch,” Chongson said.

“All we could do now is wait and see what happens.”

Toto Bandaying came off the bench to lead the Waves with 19 points. Ken Acibar tallied 15 points and Maclean Sabellina contributed 11 for Boracay Rum, which improved to 3-5 record to tie the Bakers.

It was a tough loss for the Café France, which needed the victory to enhance its chances to advance to the quarterfinals. Now the Bakers are teetering on the brink of elimination.

The Bakers, who got a game-high 24 points from Jonathan Semira, appeared to be in control after Jens Knuttel opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer and Marion Magat scored off the glass for a 46-35 advantage.

But the Waves refused to wilt. Timely shots by Sabellina, Acibar and Bandaying got the Boracay Rum back into the game.

Café France struggled with its shooting in the fourth and Boracay capitalized, outscoring its opponent, 15-4, in a span of five minutes that propelled it to a 75-65 lead with 2:34 to play.

The Waves nearly blew it though with poor shot selection and crucial turnovers in the closing minutes. A 3-pointer by Semira and a follow-up shot by Jason Deutchman tied the game at 75-75 with 10 seconds remaining.

After a time out, Café France gave up a foul before Eguilos received the inbound pass from Jeff Morial near the free throw line and took the game winner as Kevin Racal came late to contest the shot. (Dave Coros)
