The Junior Powerade Tigers dealt RnW Pacific Pipes a stunning blow to its playoff bid by defeating the Steel Masters, 87-79, in overtime on Thursday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the San Juan gym.
Alvin Padilla scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the extra period, including a 3-point play with three minutes remaining, as the Jr. Tigers stretched a two point lead to 80-75 and eventually closed out their elimination round schedule with a 3-6 record.
Unfortunately, that record is not enough to land the Jr. Tigers a place in the quarterfinals.
It was a disappointing defeat for the Steel Masters, who were hard-pressed to win to cement their spot in the next round. They had a chance to win the game in regulation but Barnett Rogado missed a crucial free throw with 6.7 remaining.
Claude Cubo tallied 11 points for the Jr Tigers and sent the game into overtime with a tough shot with 3.5 seconds left in regulation.
They carried the momentum in overtime with Cubo and Mike Gamboa scoring the first five points of the extra session and the Jr Tigers never trailed the rest of the way.
Raymond Aguilar scored 16 points, Jeric Teng had 15 while JR Buensuceso and Rogado added 12 apiece for the Steel Masters, who poicked up their second straight loss and fell to 4-4 record.
